How to Carry Wikipedia in Your Pocket

​Setting up a personal, offline archive of Wikipedia is surprisingly simple. You just need the reader application and the compressed content file.

Step 1: Install the Kiwix Reader

​First, download the standard Kiwix application for your device.

​Desktop: Download it from the official Kiwix website for macOS, Windows, or Linux.

​Mobile: Search for "Kiwix" directly in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

​Browser: You can also install the Kiwix browser extension for Chrome or Firefox, which runs locally without needing system software.

Step 2: Choose Your Archive Package

​Open the Kiwix app and browse the internal library catalog to find Wikipedia. Because Wikipedia is vast, it is offered in several sizes:

​Top Articles (~1–5 GB): Contains the text of the most-viewed articles. Perfect for smartphones with limited space.

​Text-Only (~20–25 GB): The full English Wikipedia containing all text and data tables, but zero images.

​The Full Archive (~100–120+ GB): The complete encyclopedia, including all text, tables, and full-resolution images.

Step 3: Download the File

​If you are downloading a smaller package, you can do it directly inside the Kiwix app. For the massive full archive, it is highly recommended to use a BitTorrent client via the Kiwix website. This is generally much faster and allows you to pause and resume the massive transfer without data corruption.

Step 4: Open and Explore

​Once the .zim file is on your device, disconnect from the internet and open the Kiwix app. Navigate to your Local Library, select the file, and start reading. You can search titles, read full articles, and click internal links exactly as you would on the live web.

​Storage Pro-Tip: If you are downloading the 100GB+ full archive onto a mobile device or a single-board computer, save the file to a high-speed external SSD or microSD card. Ensure the drive is formatted as exFAT or ext4, as older FAT32 formats cannot hold files larger than 4GB.
